Jill Conner, New York Critic, Presents Her Critic’s Choice Award Lisa Goesling-Award Winner  Comment by Jill Conner

“Lisa Goesling’s floral etching on Scratchbords reaches into the dark abyss of space while defining the depth parameters with lyrical petals and foliage seen on iris blossoms. “Inside of an Iris” is a dissection of the various surfaces that piece together this multi-layered flower. By approaching her subjects on different visual levels, as seen here, Goesling commits to gray-scale bringing the viewer into the subtle tones of layers. Blossoms and stems unwind in a circular pattern as if arranged upon a flat surface. Yet Goesling’s use of lyricism in line suggests a series of performative moments that spin boundlessly.”

Inside of an Iris

Photography by Bruce Starrenburg at Lightbox Studio

Inside of an Iris by Lisa Goesling                                                 Copyright                                  I found so much detail looking deep into this Iris flower, wrapping around itself, filled with shapes and textures. The multiple views create an interesting abstract. I added interest by painting some areas of the background with black enamel paint, purposely painting loosely to create the bumpy texture.

Colored – The Nature of Design – Movement

Colored – The Nature of Design – Movement                                                  Copyright    While going through the exploration process of how to add color to this piece, I knew that I wanted to make it appear ethereal. I love how the colors and textures evolved into a completely different entity from their original form.

The Nature of Design – Movement

The Nature of Design – Movement                                                                   Copyright              I have absolutely no idea what this strange dried sea creature, or perhaps seaweed, is. My friend Alex found it on a beach in North Carolina. It is crusty, and twisted and filled with lines that move along a crooked path. The eye travels across the page stopping to embrace each shape, a study of movement unto their own.

The Nature of Design – Shapes

natureofdesign_shapes200

The Nature of Design – Shapes                                                                                    Copyright Eucalyptus leaves were everywhere as we strolled through the woods in San Francisco. I grabbed a few knowing that the dried leaves would make their way into a piece some day. What they lacked in color, they made up for in texture. I found a feather I’d stored away and thought, their shapes are remarkably similar. I started looking for more elements that were feather-like and this is what evolved.

Colored – The Nature of Design – Pattern

Pattern200exclusionColored Pattern by Lisa Goesling                                                 Copyright                         After visiting the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago with my friend Jeff, I got to thinking about the gorgeous prints that were on display from ancient Asia. My process is really no different than theirs. I use a small, sharp tool to etch out delicate lines. The only difference is that they made prints of theirs and mine are each individual works of art. Why couldn’t I make prints of mine? I scanned in my art and then began to add color in Photoshop. I finally came up with a color combination that I was happy with and had my friend Bruce Starrenburg create a limited edition giclee from my art. Pretty exciting!

The Nature of Design – Pattern

Pattern200Pattern by Lisa Goesling                                                                                        Copyright While a bug is different than a rock, their basic patterns are so similar. The repetition of shapes throughout the dragonfly are repeated in the leaves and rock. Shapes, repetition, pattern, line and texture, all fundamental properties of both nature and design.
